Happy New Year 2016 and the
coming Nativity of Christ!
The Feast of the Nativity
of Jesus Christ is at the door. What gifts our Iconography school has to offer
to Him?
Last year our school
conducted lectures on the symbolism in Iconography: we discussed the symbolic
meaning of the vestments color and gestures, and looked at the particular
vestments of a priest. Thank you to father Peter for those wonderful lectures.
During practical lessons we
drew real life objects and drapery, and then learned to apply the acquired
skills to the iconography-style sketches.
A workshop by an artist and
iconographer from Russia Philip Davydov also was a success. See Pictures.
By the way, Philip told us
that these days an exhibition “Modern Iconographers of Russia” takes place in
Moscow. He participates in it together with his wife Olga Shalamova. More
information and pictures of the exhibition can be found here:

We appreciate that this artist
agreed to conduct an Iconography workshop in Calgary in June despite his busy
schedule (icon painting, participation in Iconographic events, lecturing and working
on fresco painting in churches in various parts of the world). The information
about the workshop will be provided later.
From October to December our
school conducted a preparatory course, during which the students studied human
head and face, and learned about head proportions and drawing from different
angles. They also learned to do sketches with such mediums as pencil, charcoal
and watercolor. See Pictures.
In 2015 we also kept making
boards out of different types of wood and of various sizes, and prepared them
for use in iconography. The new
icons have been painted. See Gallery.
We all approach the Feast
of Nativity bringing what we have. And God is glad when we collect the good
things on our way to Him.
