A short workshop on the preparation of the icon boards took place in January 2016 .
During Philip Davydov's course it was mentioned that in January 2016 we would prepare icon boards. A few people from Calgary and Edmonton asked to show in practice how to make boards for icon painting.
The course lasted 3 days, but all the processes need more time.
We were preparing the adhesive medium in proportion 1:15 (rabbit skin glue/water), heating it to a certain temperature. Than we applied a coat of warm glue. Next we attached cloth (or pavoloka).
The next day, when completely dry, we cut away excess cloth with sharp blade.
Boards were covered with gesso (ground) in several stages:
- We applied warm gesso with a brush and hand, getting rid of the bubbles;
- We apply gesso with a spatula (we prefer to use plastic cards). Such a simple process has some secrets that you can learn with practice. The surface of the board became whiter and smoother with each layer.
- We learned to use sandpaper. Beginners always want to do as much as possible, but the more important is " do not overdo it".
Each layer of the board had to dry out so we had some time between practical work. This time was used to display some visual material:
- Introduction of books such as "The Meaning of icons" by L.A.Uspensky, "Speculation in colors" by E.Trubetskoy, "Iconographer's Labor" Nun Juliana (Maria Sokolova), "Techniques of Icon and Wall Painting" by Aidan Hart.
- From the history of the origin of icons - "Fayum portraits"
- The exhibition "Modern Icon" on materials of Philip Davydov:

- Major defects of gessoing. Cause and cure.
The course turned out very rich, both with information and practical work.
Thank you to everyone who attended the course.
